New Music Friday: Rosie Cerquone
The How & The Why
Rosie Cerquone offers a lense into the difficulty of creation. Graduating from the University of Montana in the spring of 2020, with a BM in Percussion Performance and a minor in Media Arts, she found herself in uncharted territory. She made space in her life for her art, finding purpose in her newfound freedom. Guided by passion, Cerquone's dedication to her art boldly faces the daunting task of making something out of nothing. For her, creation is about the process not the result.
The result? Captivating her listeners by taking her life and shaping it into her art.
“The fact that you want to create is enough, and that is reason enough to create something, and no one needs to give you permission to create anything.”
The How & Why will be released on streaming platforms Friday, the 8th. Inspired by the process of finding intrinsic motivation, Cerquone speaks on her artistic journey. The ‘how’ and ‘why’ of the songs are treated existentially as Cerquone touches on themes such as love and motivation.
Ringing vibraphone echoes through Cerquone’s composition in waves of sound. Complex rhythms prove her skill and familiarity with her instruments. Cerquone’s voice grounds the listener in a timeline of her life. Influenced by both classical and jazz orchestrations, Cerquone’s music is simultaneously fluid and stable. Cerquone exemplifies growth through inclusion. Taking inspiration from those around her and crafting her art into something completely her own.
“I'm in the middle of finding my style. Which is a little bit scary to say… I think what I learned through this process is that you're never going to be at a point where you're like, ‘this is what I sound like,’ it's always gonna feel like you're transforming.”
